This series of paintings projects my reflections after living in Natal, Brazil, a region filled by enigmatic beauty where time moves slowly. The use of simple shapes, clear lines, and well-defined and contrasting areas of colour represent my impression of this society – one in which the people stand up for their simplicity and genuine attitude towards life, one which knows about pain but learned to amalgamate its African and Portuguese roots, and ultimately a society breathing contrast between the sacred and the profane, where superstition blends with religion, and where music, dance and deep poetry are the result of that alchemy.
