For the Courtneypark Library and St Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School.
The Messenger. February 2006.
The City of Mississauga selected Lydia Panart, an established local artist, to head the Courtneypark Library mural. Lydia has been commissioned to create a mural twenty-nine feet long by four feet high, but she will not complete the project alone. SOFA artists from St. Joan of Arc and St. Marcellinus have diligently been working with Lydia since October. Over the past few months students have met on a weekly basis to brainstorm and sketch plans for the mural. The theme is communication throughout the ages. “Hieroglyphics to Hyperlinks” compel students to consider all forms of communication throughout the ages and among cultures. Lydia and the students are planning a design with a lot of movement to symbolize how culture’s traditions have influenced each other and to show the progression of communication. Images of cave drawings, smoke signals, hieroglyphics, Greek alphabet, printing methods, the telephone, and satellite images are only a few of the many images incorporated into the mural. One image cleverly morphs into something new showing us how we are all connected. Students will be putting the paint brush to canvas in February. The official unveiling of the mural is expected in June.
